Brief description of the organisation's activities
Terezín has a fortification that was built in 1780 – 1790. It represents a unique and most accomplished fortress, designed in the pure style of the French Mezieres fortification school. The town, together with the fortification system, creates a unique functional complex. Up to the 40’s of the last century, the town of Terezín was a seat of a large garrison.
The tragic history of Terezín fortress started in 1942 after the violent displacement of the original inhabitants by the Nazis. The town became a Jewish ghetto to which Jews from all over Europe were deported.
After World War II, the inhabitants of the town came back, along with the Czechoslovak army. After its withdrawal from the town in 1997, the unattended facilities and grounds, including the damaged fortification system, were deserted.
After the 2002 Elbe flood, where Terezín was one of the most effected towns, it was decided to redevelop the whole Terezín microregion. As a result, an Europroject is being prepared at the moment. Within this Europroject the town of Terezín shall be revitalised. The deserted military facilities shall be developed for the purposes of academic education and scientific research. The Europroject which financially amounts to a total cost of 239 Mio. € will be financed by the Czech Government and the European Union.
