Kaunas is the second largest city in Lithuania with about 375,000 inhabitants.
The Soviet Army used 5 forts (of 9) of the former Kaunas Fortress and some military barracks and buildings in Kaunas urban space until 1990.
The former Kaunas Fortress, the only complex of such kind in the Eastern Europe, was built at the end of the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century and was used for military purposes by Russia, Germany, Soviet Union and Lithuania. The forts of the former Kaunas Fortress survived relatively well till present times. Only one of them, which was used as a prison and a concentration camp, is restored and used as a historical museum. Adaptation of the forts of the former Kaunas Fortress for the cultural, tourism and SME infrastructure provides a real possibility to preserve this unique historical monument.
For the futire it is necessary to attract the interest of businessmen of Convernet countries (and maybe from our country) to restore the forts of the former Kaunas Fortress and to adapt them for cultural needs of the people and for their own business because of limited amount of available public finances.
